Over the past few weeks, and indeed in my speech to the Plaid Cymru spring conference at the weekend, I’ve raised problems with the cardiology service in the NHS.
A review of heart services in the Hywel Dda Board, though, threatens to make the situation even worse, by putting forward plans to further centralise at Carmarthen.
Today’s announcement is unexpected and will be a huge blow to the people in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. That will leave patients in Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire without local access to cardiac services that are so critical to saving lives. This will cause a huge amount of concern in these communities.
We need to keep life-saving hospital services as close as possible to the patients. The announcement today makes it clear that some patients will be expected to travel up to an hour and a half before receiving initial medical intervention, and that will cause a huge amount of worry.
